Insomnia and Anxiety Study

What is the Insomnia and Anxiety study?

We are recruiting individuals who are currently experiencing difficulties with both anxiety and insomnia. This study will compare the effectiveness of two of our internet-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (iCBT) courses in reducing symptoms of insomnia, anxiety and other indicators of mental wellbeing. Both the Insomnia course and Anxiety course involve 4 lessons to be completed over a 6-8 week period.

The findings of this study will have implications for treatment recommendations for people who have difficulties with both anxiety and insomnia.

How does it all work?

If you are eligible for the study and have completed the application process (see below for more details), you will be randomly allocated to either an online CBT course for Anxiety or an online CBT course for Insomnia. You will complete 4 lessons in 6-8 weeks. Each lesson includes comic-style slides that introduce you to the story of a fictional character as they learn CBT skills to manage their symptoms. A Lesson Summary accompanies each lesson. This provides additional important information for you to review and worksheets for you to practise your skills.

Throughout the study, you will be required to complete questionnaires related to anxiety, sleep and other measures of mental wellbeing. Questionnaires will be administered:
- Prior to treatment
- Throughout the course of treatment
- One week after you finish treatment
- Three months after you finish treatment

You will also be required to complete a sleep diary for 7 consecutive days: prior to treatment, one week after you finish treatment and three months after you finish treatment.

What can I expect if I decide to apply?

First we ask you to read the Participant Information Statement, and then to click ‘Apply Now’. If you consent to participate, this means you consent to take part in the application process (to see whether this study could potentially be helpful for you and to determine whether you meet eligibility criteria); and if eligible, to becoming a participant of the research study.

The application process involves 3 stages:
1. Online screening questionnaires (approx. 10 mins)
If you register (provide your name, age, gender, phone number, and email address), you will be asked to complete a few brief questionnaires about your symptoms. If you meet eligibility criteria, you will then be offered a telephone interview.
2. Telephone interview (approx. 20-30 mins)
You will speak with a clinician (e.g., a clinical psychologist) to discuss further information about your symptoms and determine your eligibility for this study. If you meet eligibility criteria, you will then be asked to complete a sleep diary.
3. Sleep diary (approx. 2-3 mins per day, for 7 days)
This involves completing a few questions about your sleep, every morning over a 7 day period. If you complete the sleep diary, you will join the study and start treatment.

If the application process reveals this study could be beneficial for you and you meet eligibility criteria at each of these stages, you will be randomly allocated to one of the two treatments programs (online CBT for Anxiety or online CBT for Insomnia) and you can begin your course immediately, at no cost.

Do you have any ineligibility criteria for this study?

Yes. Unfortunately, we cannot include individuals with bipolar disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia, substance abuse or dependence, or severe depression as we do not have evidence that these conditions benefit from our courses. Additionally, as we must adhere to the strict patient safety regulations required by our Research Ethics Committee, we cannot include individuals who are suicidal.

Additionally, in order for this study to evaluate the treatments, we cannot include individuals who: have other untreated sleep related disorders beside insomnia; are engaging in current psychological treatment for insomnia or anxiety; engage in shift work or have other commitments that interfere with regular night-time sleep patterns; have bed times outside of 8pm-2am more than twice a week not primarily due to insomnia; have previously completed a This Way Up course for insomnia or anxiety; have changed or started psychological or pharmacological treatment in the past 2 months before application.

Yes, this is a free treatment.

What if I can't finish the course?
Participation is voluntary and free. You can drop out at any time but we would love for you to stay. We want to learn what contributes to success in people who complete the whole course so that we can develop effective treatments for people like you!
